After all, Iowa State beat Iowa (15-13) who beat Illinois (10-6) who beat Ohio State (28-21), and Notre Dame beat Stanford (21-14) who beat California (13-10) who beat Tennessee (45-31) who beat Kentucky (52-50) who beat LSU (43-37).
