Seen | Movie | Year | Director | Runtime (min.) | MPAA Rating | Medium | Beth's Grade | Josh's Grade | Comments
1. | 5-Jan | MST3K: Red Zone Cuba | 1966/ 1994 | C. Francis/ T. Beaulieu | 97 | -- | VHS | + | + | Ever wanted to see eight soldiers invade Cuba and its 12 occupants? |
2. | 5-Jan | You Can't Take It With You | 1984 | Kirk Browning/ Ellis Rabb | 116 | -- | VHS | + | + | Classic play with unrelenting laughs and gags. Too bad videos of this play are so hard to find. |
3. | 6-Jan | Heist | 2001 | David Mamet | 111 | R | Theater | 0 | 0 | Not as good as Mamet classics The Spanish Prisoner, The Winslow Boy, or State and Main. Sympathetic characters are hard to find in this movie. |
4. | 8-Jan | Waiting for Guffman | 1996 | Christopher Guest | 84 | R | DVD | + | + | Quite possibly the funniest movie ever made. |
5. | 12-Jan | Best in Show | 2000 | Christopher Guest | 90 | PG-13 | DVD | + | + | Not Guffman, but pretty darn good. |
6. | 13-Jan | This is Spinal Tap | 1984 | Rob Reiner | 82 | R | DVD | + | + | The funniest movie ever made about a fake rock band. |
7. | 13-Jan | Sidekicks | 1992 | Aaron Norris | 101 | PG | TV (plex) | - | Beth used to have a crush on Jonathan Brandis. Why else would she watch a Chuck Norris movie?
8. | 13-Jan | Much Ado About Nothing | 1993 | Kenneth Branagh | 111 | PG-13 | TV (plex) | + | An all-star cast delivers this Shakespeare comedy brilliantly.
9. | 19-Jan | Mary Poppins | 1964 | Robert Stevenson | 140 | G | TV (abc) | + | What can you say? Classic Disney family entertainment. They just don't make movies like this anymore.
10. | 20-Jan | Magnolia | 1999 | Paul Thomas Anderson | 188 | R | DVD | + | + | Very well-made. Bizzare and disturbing at times. A lot of nasty language and few characters to sympathize with. Great acting and directing. |
11. | 21-Jan | Heartbreakers | 2001 | David Mirkin | 123 | PG-13 | DVD | 0 | 0 | Many funny moments, but could have been better. Not a particularly memorable movie, but enjoyable. |
12. | 25-Jan | Evolution | 2001 | Ivan Reitman | 101 | PG-13 | DVD | 0 | - | Sometimes funny, sometimes gross. Farces can really be bad if they don't work, and Beth thought it worked better than Josh thought it did. |
13. | 26-Jan | Amelie | 2001 (France) | Jean-Pierre Jeunet | 122 | R | Theater | + | + | Colorful, happy, quirky film that is thoroughly enjoyable to watch. Brief unnecessary sexual imagery. |
14. | 27-Jan | Wonder Boys | 2000 | Curtis Hanson | 111 | R | DVD | 0 | 0 | Somewhat boring with not as much of a point as it thinks it has. |
15. | 2-Feb | Spy Game | 2001 | Tony Scott | 126 | R | Theater | + | + | Brad Pitt and Robert Redford. Enjoyable, exciting action flick. What else do you need? |
16. | 6-Feb | The Purple Rose of Cairo | 1985 | Woody Allen | 84 | PG | TV (oxy) | + | A clever and original story, though the ending didn't satisfy Beth.
17. | 9-Feb | Ghost World | 2001 | Terry Zwigoff | 111 | R | VHS | 0 | + | The characters were interesting and real, and the movie accomplished what it tried to do perfectly. It didn't strike Beth as much as it did Josh. |
18. | 15-Feb | The Last of the Mohicans | 1992 | Michael Mann | 122 | R | TV (fx) | + | Great action-romance, beautifully shot, and with an amazing score that really makes the film.
19. | 16-Feb | Cool Runnings | 1993 | James Turteltaub | 98 | PG | TV (wgn) | + | Family-friendly, hip, and funny Disney movie. Just one of those movies you can't help but like.
20. | 18-Feb | Election | 1999 | Alexander Payne | 103 | R | TV (fx) | 0 | Not as bad as Beth remembers it being the first time.
21. | 20-Feb | The Majestic | 2001 | Frank Darabont | 152 | PG | Theater | + | + | Moves too slowly at times, very predictable, and guilty of many movie cliches, but we liked it anyway. |
22. | 22-Feb | A Walk to Remember | 2002 | Adam Shankman | 101 | PG | Theater | - | Mandy Moore can act, but you wouldn't know it from this movie. Characters were one-dimensional and changed too abruptly for Beth to buy what was happening.
23. | 23-Feb | Hart's War | 2002 | Gregory Hoblit | 125 | R | Theater | + | Not about war, but about relationships and honor. Slow at times, but worked overall.
24. | 8-Mar | Kate & Leopold | 2001 | James Mangold | 121 | PG-13 | Theater | + | 0 | Latest Meg Ryan romantic comedy. Beth didn't love it, but thought it was more clever than most "fish out of water" movies. Josh thought it was mediocre and predictable. |
25. | 8-Mar | Mulholland Drive | 2001 | David Lynch | 145 | R | Theater | + | + | First 100 minutes are at times confusing. Last 45 are downright impossible (and full of objectionable material). When you finally figure out what the movie is about, it is incredible. |
26. | 12-Mar | The Royal Tenenbaums | 2001 | Wes Anderson | 109 | R | Theater | + | + | Funny, offbeat, dark movie with an all-star cast that has real chemistry. |
27. | 12-Mar | Orange County | 2002 | Jake Kasdan | 87 | PG-13 | Theater | 0 | 0 | Funny plot, but the characters are either not well written or not well acted. Some really stupid moments, but if you like Jack Black we guarantee you will laugh. |
28. | 22-Mar | Ocean's Eleven | 2001 | Steven Soderbergh | 116 | PG-13 | Theater | + | + | Pure entertainment. More easygoing and funny than your typical heist movie. Doesn't take itself too seriously, which really adds to its charm. |
29. | 27-Mar | Adrenaline Drive | 1999 (Japan) | Shinobu Yaguchi | 112 | NR | VHS | + | + | Kind of stupid, but a lighthearted romantic comedy. Easy to follow the humor despite being subtitled. |
30. | 30-Mar | A Moment of Innocence | 1996
(Iran/ France) |
Mohsen Makhmalbaf | 78 | NR | VHS | 0 | + | Not anything like most western movies. Beth liked the last half but thought it took too long to develop. Josh liked the whole thing. We absolutely loved the last shot. |
31. | 9-Apr | Vanilla Sky | 2001 | Cameron Crowe | 135 | R | Theater | 0 | 0 | Long movie with too much setup for a mediocre final payoff. There are so many twists throughout that the final twist is overshadowed. The end of the movie is idiot-proof, with dialogue that explains exactly what's going on. They should have left it more open-ended. |
32. | 13-Apr | I Am Sam | 2001 | Jessie Nelson | 132 | PG-13 | Theater | + | + | Critics complained that this movie was manipulative. They are right, but that doesn't mean this is not a good movie. Predictable but touching, with plenty of comic relief. Great acting. |
33. | 13-Apr | Crossroads | 2002 | Tamra Davis | 94 | PG-13 | Theater | - | - | This movie is just a vehicle for Britney Spears to show off her voice (among other things). Ironically, her acting (and the acting of others) isn't bad, but the script is absolutely horrible. The scene where Britney "learns" the music her boyfriend wrote for her "poem" "I'm Not a Girl" made us want to simultaneously "laugh" and "throw up." |
34. | 20-Apr | Yi Yi | 2000
(Taiwan/ Japan) |
Edward Yang | 173 | NR | DVD | + | + | This movie was shot with very colorful imagery, framing the story perfectly. It is slow-paced and sometimes hard to follow, but overall it is very enjoyable. |
35. | 21-Apr | EDtv | 1999 | Ron Howard | 122 | PG-13 | TV (tnt) | - | Not exceptionally bad, but very not good. Not much character development. If you want to see a movie about a guy on TV 24/7, skip this and watch The Truman Show instead.
36. | 25-Apr | The Count of Monte Cristo | 2002 | Kevin Reynolds | 131 | PG-13 | Theater | + | + | It is a testament to this movie's greatness that it did not feel nearly as long as it was. It was aesthetically pleasing and has something for everyone: swordplay, great dialogue, gorgeous guys and hot chicks, and an underlying love story driving the action. Really a good film. |
37. | 28-Apr | Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone | 2001 | Chris Columbus | 152 | PG | Theater | 0 | 0 | As with many films taken from books, this one suffers from plot elements that appear out of nowhere and disappear just as quickly, characters that seem to act without motivation, and scenes that assume you know something you actually don't. This is what happens when you have to edit a book down to a screenplay. I'm sure this film appeals to people 12 and younger and/or people who have read the book. Being neither, we found it mediocre but not bad. |
38. | 12-May | Notting Hill | 1999 | Roger Michell | 124 | PG-13 | TV | + | + | We first saw this at Matt's "bachelor party". It's a quirky, fun movie. It's not anything really special, but it is definitely better than most romantic comedies. |
39. | 3-Jun | Monsters, Inc. | 2001 | Pete Docter, et al. | 92 | G | Theater | + | + | A fun little film. Like most Pixar films, this one left Josh feeling like there was something missing. When he figures out what, he'll reveal it in a press conference the following Friday afternoon. |
40. | 8-Jun | A Beautiful Mind | 2001 | Ron Howard | 134 | PG-13 | Theater | + | + | There are so many different ways this movie could have been ruined, and it manages to sidestep them all. Say what you will about Russell Crowe: he did a tremendous job in this film. |
41. | 8-Jun | Big Trouble | 2002 | Barry Sonnenfeld | 84 | PG-13 | Theater | 0 | 0 | A funny movie along the same lines as Orange County. Too cluttered and complex at times. Josh found it much funnier than O.C., but Beth preferred O.C. Neither movie was particularly special. |
42. | 9-Jun | My Man Godfrey | 1936 | Gregory La Cava | 94 | NR | TV (pbs) | + | + | This is a black-and-white movie with humor reminiscent of You Can't Take it With You, only with a slower pace. The premise and characters of the movie are simple, yet it is still hilarious. Why are moviemakers now incapable of that? |
43. | 12-Jun | Caddyshack | 1980 | Harold Ramis | 99 | R | DVD | - | - | What a weird movie. Awfully disjointed, with several scenes that didn't seem to have any purpose whatsoever. Chevy Chase was usually funny, Bill Murray was often funny, and everything else left us scratching our heads and wondering what the big deal is. |
44. | 14-Jun | Doctor Zhivago | 1965 | David Lean | 197 | PG-13 | DVD | + | + | A very good movie, but also a very long one. Very well-acted with the appropriate epic feel. Just don't try to watch it if you're sleepy. |
45. | 18-Jun | 10 Things I Hate About You | 1999 | Gil Junger | 97 | PG-13 | TV (usa) | - | A typical teen movie, similar to She's All That--Heath Ledger gets paid to take Julia Stiles out so Andrew Keegan can date JS's younger sister Larisa Oleynick (who can't date until JS does). HL actually falls for JS, JS finds out he was paid, big fight, LO drops school jerk AK and ends up with nice boy Joey Gordon-Levitt, JS forgives HL and everyone lives happily ever after. Oops, did I just give away the ending? ;) Ah well, at least looking at Heath Ledger for 90 minutes isn't the worst thing in the world...
46. | 20-Jun | Waking Ned Devine | 1998 (Ireland/ UK/ France/ USA) | Kirk Jones | 91 | PG | TV (brv) | + | Funny and a little bit weird at times, especially the whole pig farming thing.....nevermind. Entertaining and easy to watch despite the Irish accents.
47. | 22-Jun | Hearts in Atlantis | 2001 | Scott Hicks | 101 | PG-13 | DVD | 0 | 0 | Kind of an odd movie that didn't feel completely...complete to us somehow. |
48. | 23-Jun | Ice Age | 2002 | Chris Wedge/ Carlos Saldanha | 81 | PG | Theater | + | 0 | This is pretty much your typical predictable-for-kids-but-funny-enough-for- adults animated movie. Josh thought the end was a cop-out. I suppose, but it is first and foremost a kids' movie... |
49. | 23-Jun | High Crimes | 2002 | Carl Franklin | 115 | PG-13 | Theater | + | + | A decent movie that did a respectable job of keeping us guessing. Had sort of a Double Jeopardy feel to it, though the storylines aren't all that similar. Good performances, though script probably could have been improved. Song over ending credits rocks. :) |
50. | 25-Jun | Hollywood Ending | 2002 | Woody Allen | 114 | PG-13 | Theater | + | + | We basically thought the exact same thing as Matt. Better than Jade Scorpion. |
51. | 28-Jun | Hatari! | 1962 | Howard Hawks | 157 | NR | TV (amc) | + | I (Beth) love this movie and have seen it many times. It's about a group of people in Africa catching animals for zoos. That doesn't really sound like a great movie, but it's really about the people and their relationships with one another. And it's funny. And it has John Wayne. (Not that I'm a big John Wayne fan.) The only thing I'm not crazy about is the last minute or so. Oh well.
52. | 2-Jul | The Rookie | 2002 | John Lee Hancock | 127 | G | Theater | + | + | Good movie. Who cares if it's predictable. Sometimes you just need movies like this. And the kid? Seriously could not have been cuter. Plus, he could actually ACT. *gasp* |
53. | 9-Jul | MST3K: Future War | 1995/ 1998 | A. Doublin/ T. Beaulieu | 97 | -- | TV (sci) | + | + | One of the best "Mike" MST3K eps. The special effects would have been bad in 1976, let alone 1995 when it was actually made. You don't find many movies with an ex-hooker/drug dealer nun and her bible-quoting, space-dinosaur- fighting friend from another planet. Priceless. |
54. | 14-Jul | Door to Door | 2002 | Steven Schachter | 90 | -- | TV (tnt) | + | + | If you didn't already know how brilliant William H. Macy is, just watch this movie. Even if Hallmark Hall of Fame-type movies aren't your thing, you can still appreciate this performance. |
55. | 14-Jul | MST3K: Pod People | 1983/ 1991 | J. Simone/ T. Beaulieu | 97 | -- | VHS | + | + | The all-time funniest MST3K episode. Period. If you only watch one episode, let it be this one. Because then you won't only watch one. Unless you're crazy. Like Kim. ;) |
56. | 15-Jul | Pleasantville | 1998 | Gary Ross | 124 | PG-13 | TV (abc) | - | 0 | Horrible, horrible ending ruins what could have been a decent movie. Josh liked it better on subsequent viewings, but Beth did not. The movie starts great, then gains momentum as it starts to fall downhill. |
57. | 20-Jul | Mulan | 1998 | Tony Bancroft/ Barry Cook | 88 | G | DVD | 0 | 0 | Really bad music (or as Beth puts it, "cheesy-bad"). Movie wasn't too memorable, although Josh didn't pay too much attention anyway. |
58. | 21-Jul | Phenomenon | 1996 | Jon Turteltaub | 123 | PG | TV (fam) | 0 | Too long. The story did manage to hide its direction well up to a point. It was fine.
59. | 29-Jul | She's All That | 1999 | Robert Iscove | 95 | PG-13 | TV (usa) | + | + | Typical unpopular-teen-turns-popular- with-the-help-of-a-popular-teen plot. Unlike similar movies (like Drive Me Crazy) this movie was engaging and fun to watch despite its predictability. It still had its stupid moments, though. Best moment: listen to Kevin Pollack's "Jeopardy" responses. |
60. | 2-Aug | Short Circuit | 1986 | John Badham | 98 | PG | TV(amc) | + | + | The movie that gave us the phrases "Number 5 is alive!" and "Disassemble!?" This is Mac and Me without the kids and with a robot instead of aliens. The movie that made Steve Guttenberg what he is today... :) Stupid but classic 80's fare. |
61. | 12-Aug | Happy, Texas | 1999 | Mark Illsley | 98 | PG-13 | TV (com) | + | See this movie. Steve Zahn is funny. Jeremy Northam is funny. William H. Macy is funny. The script is funny. The editing is funny. The cinematography is funny. Did we mention, see this movie?
62. | 15-Aug | Insomnia | 2002 | Christopher Nolan | 118 | R | Theater | + | + | Not as good as Memento. Very good but not really a single light moment in the movie. Perhaps a bit too serious for its own good. Robin Williams once again proves that he is a much better dramatic actor than comic actor. |
63. | 20-Aug | About a Boy | 2002 | Chris Weitz, Paul Weitz | 101 | PG-13 | Theater | + | + | This could have been a bad movie, but it was done perfectly. It was clever when it tried to be clever, and the serious moments worked very well. The movie accomplished everything it set out to do, and we were genuinely interested with everything that was going on in the plot. We agree with everything Matt says. |
64. | 24-Aug | Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones | 2002 | George Lucas | 143 | PG | Theater | 0 | 0 | Not cohesive. It was obvious that we were watching a movie who's sole purpose was setting up the next movie in the trilogy. When Jimmy Smits came on to the screen, Beth immediately thought "Hey! Jimmy Smits! In Star Wars?" A movie that lets you go back into reality that easily isn't doing a good job. |
65. | 3-Sep | Lilo and Stitch | 2002 | Dean Deblois, Chris Sanders | 85 | PG | Theater (drive-in) | 0 | + | It did not feel like a kids' movie very much. There were elements to the plot that seemed a bit serious for little children. Other than that, it was reasonably cute and funny. It worked better for Josh than Beth. |
66. | 3-Sep | Signs | 2002 | M. Night Shyamalan | 106 | PG-13 | Theater (drive-in) | + | + | Spooky in a creepy way. Trailers didn't give much away. We expected it to be strictly a psychological thriller, but it ended up more than that. |
67. | 7-Sep | Minority Report | 2002 | Steven Spielberg | 145 | PG-13 | Theater | + | + | Very good. Not overly predictable. Neither of us like dark future movies very much, but this was an exception. Impressive special effects. |
68. | 13-Sep | Super Troopers | 2001 | Jay Chandrasekhar | 103 | R | DVD | - | - | We were in Family Video with Mom and Dad looking for a movie to watch. I spotted this movie and vaguely remembered some good reviews. We rented it. Once, we rented Forces of Nature because Beth wanted to see it, and I've never let her live it down. Now we are even. Dad slept through the last two-thirds of the movie. The rest of us should have been so lucky. Do not ask us about this movie, for we will not tell you anything. In fact, we did not watch this movie, and this "review" does not exist. Yeah. |
69. | 15-Sep | Moulin Rouge | 2001 | Baz Luhrmann | 127 | PG-13 | DVD | + | + | Mediocre script. Everything else is scrumtrulescent. Few movies make you notice the editing, and when you do it's not usually a good thing. In this case, the editing and cinematography were exceptional. The music is great with the exception of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Like a Virgin", which felt out of place. The movie is colorful, bright, dark, loud, subdued, eclectic, and brilliant. And we all know how Beth feels about teh closing credits music. |
70. | 29-Sep | Six Days Seven Nights | 1998 | Ivan Reitman | 101 | PG-13 | TV (usa) | - | - | Exceptionally mediocre. The plot is implausable, yet boring. There may be a few funny moments, but not nearly as many as a romantic comedy should have. This was a romantic comedy, right? There was no chemistry between any two members of the cast. The worst thing a romantic comedy can do is fail to convince us that the characters are in love with each other at the end. This movie wasn't even close. |
71. | 1-Oct | Scooby-Doo | 2002 | Raja Gosnell | 87 | PG | Theater | 0 | + | Great for fans of the cartoon, okay for non-fans. The film did a good job of capturing the cartoon's essence and transferring it to live action. Beth isn't so much a fan of that, which is probably why she liked it less. The actors obviously had a lot of fun making this movie. |
72. | 5-Oct | The Bourne Identity | 2002 | Doug Liman | 118 | PG-13 | Theater | 0 | + | Almost your typical spy thriller, but with a bit of a twist. The film isn't too horribly predictable, and the performances are solid -- Franka Potente is especially enjoyable to watch. In the end everything just didn't quite come together well enough for Beth. |
73. | 6-Oct | The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain | 1995 | Christopher Monger | 99 | PG | VHS | 0 | 0 | Not sure why in a so-called "romantic comedy" we don't really meet one of the romantic leads until more than halfway through the film. Kind of hard to believe they're in love when we don't see them interact enough. But the rest of the film is charming and low-key, and Hugh Grant isn't too "Hugh Grant." |
74. | 7-Oct | Life as a House | 2001 | Irwin Winkler | 125 | R | DVD | + | This was a better movie than I thought it would be. It's good, solid drama, with great performances (Hayden Christensen is infinitely better than in Clones), and manages to be heartfelt without being too sappy.
75. | 16-Oct | Spider-Man | 2002 | Sam Raimi | 121 | PG-13 | Theater | + | + | Beth liked pretty much everything about this movie, Josh didn't enjoy it quite as much as he thought he would, but still thought it was quite well done. The film did a good job of bringing the comic book characters to life, and Tobey Maguire really worked well in his role (much to Beth's surprise). Looking forward to renting the DVD for Sam Raimi's commentary. We like Sam Raimi. |
76. | 22-Oct | Mumford | 1999 | Lawrence Kasdan | 112 | R | TV (com) | + | A curiously charming movie that also has a nice amount of humor, though not so much of the laugh-aloud variety. It's a very human movie that doesn't care as much about having huge plot points as it does its characters (there's still more plot than your typical Miramax movie, though). I just like it.
77. | 24-Oct | Blue Crush | 2002 | John Stockwell | 104 | PG-13 | Theater | + | 0 | Not really sure what to say about this film. It's never going to be on anyone's top ten list, but it's not bad, either. Josh felt it succeeded at being the kind of movie it wanted to be, but he just didn't get into it. It grabbed Beth more, and she went away from it liking it, though she can't really put into words exactly why. |
78. | 24-Oct | Austin Powers in Goldmember | 2002 | Jay Roach | 94 | PG-13 | Theater | 0 | 0 | So, this movie has a lot of really dumb stuff in it. It also has some really funny stuff. Hence the neutrals. Josh, who has seen both previous Powers, didn't think it was as rehashed as the last one was. |
79. | 27-Oct | Double Jeopardy | 1999 | Bruce Beresford | 105 | R | TV (cbs) | + | 0 | Beth likes this movie, Josh thinks it has too many flaws. But those Tommy-Lee-Jones-tracking-down-a-fugitive-who's-really-innocent movies tend to be pretty funny. |
80. | 2-Nov | The Jerk | 1979 | Carl Reiner | 94 | R | VHS | + | 0 | Very funny at times (i.e. the scene where Steve Martin is leaving his mansion after he goes broke). Some parts don't seem to work as well. Beth gave it the benefit of the doubt because of its age. |
81. | 4-Nov | Angel Eyes | 2001 | Luis Mandoki | 102 | R | DVD | + | + | Not at all the movie we thought it would be. It's not a cop movie or a supernatural movie or a thriller. It's about two people falling in love and coming to terms with the past. It lures you in with the mystery surrounding Jim Caviezel's character and then surprises you with the direction it takes. So few movies these days give you what you don't expect that when one does it's a pleasant change. |
82. | 6-Nov | O Brother, Where Art Thou? | 2000 | Joel Coen | 106 | PG-13 | DVD | + | This was a very different kind of movie. The cinematography was excellent and conveyed the setting perfectly. The script was very funny at times but far from perfect at others. The bottom line is that the film worked for me, but I could see how it might not for some people.
